Nighttime Project Ideas
Nighttime lends itself to so many questions about that mysterious, immutable cycle of morning to night happening over and over again. Here are just some of them that I’ve always wanted to explore. Many books have been written about aspects of nighttime — have a look at the nighttime book list on the last page.
- Why is there nighttime? (the movement of planets? orbits? the sun?)
Here is a wonderful book about how important the sun is to us: My Light by Molly Bang, Blue Sky Press, ISBN 043948961X
- How does glow-in-the-dark ink work? Where does the light come from for chemical light products such as http://www.glowingstick.com/ http://www.omniglow.com/
- How can you see in the dark? You can look up Night Owl Night Vision products and find binoculars that let you see in the middle of the night, in caves, or deep in the ocean.
Nighttime Animals
- Where do worms sleep? In fact, where and how do all the other animals, insects, birds and fish sleep? How do giraffes sleep? Find out if lions really nap for 22 hours a day. (My cat does!)
- Nocturnal animals, the ones that sleep all day and hunt at night — what special kinds of eyes and ears do they have, living like that in darkness?
- Who invented clocks? What did people use before modern clocks?
Nighttime Inventions
- For instance, you can imagine amazing beds!
- I’m working on a story right now about a bed that folds into a package the size of a sandwich. It can be inflated in seconds into a huge, safe airbag so you can sleep anywhere — on a mountaintop, in the snow, floating in the sea. (What if you floated all night and woke up the next morning somewhere completely unfamiliar?)
- I thought beds on a ferris wheel would make a good story, too. It would take the whole night to go all the way around.
- How about a bed that’s actually a white tiger, happy to hold you in its arms all night long?
- What kind of bizarre bed would you put in your own story? What other new inventions for nighttime can you come up with?
