Some people want to see their name in lights—I’m happy to see mine in construction paper. Sometimes when I come into a school, a kid will come up and ask me breathlessly, “Are you really her?” Aside from author adoration (and let’s face it, I do like that), going into schools and classrooms where my books have triggered the children’s own writing, drawing and ideas is a terrific experience. Also I get really great mail.
